Xtreme Body Position

(Orange dots = sailors)

Xtreme body position is a drill that helps sailors understand why body position is important. To do it, you set a reaching course, and have them sail around it. The first time around have them hike out to starboard the whole way round. The second time, hike out to port, then the third time get them to sit as far forward centre as possible, then the fourth as far aft centre as possible.

Teaching Points:

  • In the briefing ask them to notice how their boat responds to the change in body position, ie. speed, tiller compensation/steering
  • Weather/Lee helm
  • Body Position

Modifications:

  • Have them do as many laps of each as you feel
  • Set a windward/leeward instead of a reach
  • Do races
