Favoured End

Find the favoured end is a great drill for Green Fleeters or even seasoned racers. For this drill, the coach places the pin end either overly high or overly low, creating a large line bias. Sailors have to determine the bias and find the line for a good start.

Teaching Points:

  • Finding the favoured end of the line
  • Taking a transit
  • Starts
  • Holding position on the line

Modifications:

  • For Greenies, tell them what the bias will be in the briefing and show them what to look out for
  • Try each bias a couple times, and then make it less obvious and see if sailors are still getting it right
  • Set a windward mark and do a short race after every start, or make every second start a race to give them a practice go
